RSO - National Society of Black Engineers

Founded in 1975, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is one of the largest student-governed organizations in the United States. With a mission “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community,” NSBE supports a global network of more than 30,000 members across collegiate, professional, and pre-college chapters.

NSBE’s roots trace back to Purdue University in the early 1970s, where a group of Black engineering students facing high dropout rates and limited support formed the Society of Black Engineers to foster community and academic success. Their efforts culminated in the first national meeting in 1975, where 48 students from 32 institutions came together to formally establish NSBE.

Today, NSBE empowers students and professionals through leadership training, scholarships, career development, networking opportunities, and outreach programs aimed at inspiring future generations in STEM.

Note: You do not have to be Black or an engineer to join NSBE. Membership is open to all individuals who support the organization’s mission and values.
